Armenia hosts seminar on energy security

A seminar on energy security was organized under the auspices of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council in the Armenian capital, Yerevan, on 2 and 3 October. The event was attended by 65 participants from 12 countries and experts from international institutions and research establishments.

The first of the seminar's three sessions focused on energy security challenges in the Caucasus, taking account of existing and future projects regarding energy sources from the Caspian and Central Asia.

The second session addressed energy security from an international and regional perspective. Global trends and forecasts concerning energy supplies and demands were reviewed; an overview of the role of international organizations in the promotion of energy security was given; and the development and potential for cooperation in the field of nuclear energy were assessed.

The third session considered measures that could be adopted to increase supply and promote its diversification. Key factors taken into account included the role of renewable energy resources; the importance of public and private partnerships for investment in the energy sector; the development of research and modelling in the field of nuclear energy safety; and ways to ensure robust and resilient energy infrastructure protection throughout the energy supply chain. National and international perspectives were offered on this increasingly important dimension of energy security.

The seminar demonstrated the considerable value of advancing international and regional cooperation in the sphere of energy security and energy infrastructure security.
