NATO humanitarian support to Georgia
Following a request from Georgia for humanitarian assistance, NATO has coordinated the delivery of humanitarian relief items through its Civil Emergency Planning (CEP) procedures. Several urgent requirements needed for the civilian population affected by the armed conflict were identified by the Georgian authorities.
To date, the request for assistance from 10 August 2008 has been met with donations from 28 EAPC countries. According to information from contributing nations, some hundreds of tons of relief items, such as 500 tents, 10,500 blankets, 3,700 sleeping bags, clothes, food and drinking water, as well as medical supplies, such as 180,000 bandages, 8,000 blood product units, medicines, disinfectants, were provided by NATO and Partner countries.
In addition, EAPC nations have contributed fire-fighting equipment and 2 fire-fighting airplanes. The humanitarian assistance was transported by land from the neighbouring countries, by ship and by 75 flights from countries across the EAPC area.
