NATO and Afghanistan agree on information security

NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer and the Afghan Ambassador to Belgium, H.E. Mr. Zia Nezam, signed the NATO-Afghan Security Agreement in Brussels on 28 March 2008.

The Security Agreement provides a framework for the future exchange of classified information between the Alliance and Afghanistan. It will facilitate the continued exchange of information necessary to ensure good co-ordination between the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and the Afghan authorities.

“This agreement shows that mutual trust between NATO and Afghanistan continues to grow”, said the Secretary General. “The Alliance is determined to build upon this relationship and to intensify its cooperation with the Afghan authorities to achieve lasting stability and security throughout the country.”

A similar agreement has been signed with most of NATO’s Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council and Mediterranean Dialogue partners, as well as contact countries.
