Secretary General meets with Canadian opinion leaders

A group of Canadian Academics and Representatives of the Security and Defence Forum gathered at NATO HQ on Monday 10th December.

They met with the Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer who gave the group a short update on the current ISAF mission in Afghanistan.

“The Alliance is very much focused on the mission in Afghanistan and we are seeing huge progress on the ground in terms of reconstruction and development,” De Hoop Scheffer said.

He also reiterated that more support in terms of training and equipping the Afghan National Army (ANA) and the Afghan National Police (ANP) is needed.

During the day the group also met with the Assistant Secretary General for Operations Martin Howard, the Assistant Secretary for Public Diplomacy Jean-Francois Bureau and the Chairman of the Military Committee, General Ray Henault.

The Canadian group will be travelling on an eight-day mission to Afghanistan, where they will visit a Canadian Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) based in Kandahar Province,  as well as other NATO Allied operations.
