In an interview with NATO Review, the chairman of the Nobel Peace Prize winning IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) says that climate change's security implications require a new approach and definition of security.
Dr Rajendra Pachauri, whose IPCC shared the Prize with Al Gore this year, highlighted the strain that climate change will have on resources, borders, mass migrations and on governments and international organisations. He suggests changes in structure and direction for both the United Nations and NATO and emphasises the need for visionary leaders.
'I think, given the fact that NATO is an organization which has enormous strengths, with the inputs of a large number of extremely important countries, I think it has to redefine its role,’ Dr Pachauri says. ‘I would imagine that it should be driven by a much greater study of what is likely to happen in the future, than to be caught unawares. And if that's the case NATO certainly can play an extremely important role in preventing or managing some of these threats and problems.’
