NATO supports first Greek-Turkish
Youth Forum in Athens

The first ever Greek-Turkish Youth Forum organised by NATO and the Youth Atlantic Treaty Associations (YATAs), took place in Athens on 2-3 December.

The event was hosted by the Greek Association for Atlantic and European Cooperation (GAEEC), and supported by NATO’s Public Diplomacy Division.

Approximately 70 university students and young professionals from Greece and Turkey participated in the event, Representatives from Italy, France, Lithuania, Russia, Israel, Jordan and the Balkans were also present.

The aim of the forum was to promote dialogue and cooperation among the youth in Greece, Turkey and the wider region.

During the two-day Forum the participants discussed issues such as the current security challenges in South East Europe and regional cooperation including NATO’s agenda in the run up to the 2008, Bucharest Summit.

The event provided a platform for an open and frank exchange of views and networking opportunities for youths from different historical, cultural and political backgrounds - particularly valuable in a region with longstanding bilateral issues.

As a follow-up, it is envisaged to hold a regional Summer School in Turkey in 2008.

The NATO Public Diplomacy Division has for the past several years been supporting a wide range of youth activities and other network projects, in order to promote dialogue and cooperation amongst youths across the Euro-Atlantic area.
