Visit to NATO by the Prime Minister of New Zealand

The Prime Minister of New Zealand Ms. Helen Clark visited the NATO Headquarters and met with the Secretary General. They had an exchange of views about issues of common concern and especially about the security situation in Afghanistan.

The Secretary General said the Alliance is grateful for New Zealand’s efforts and contribution to NATO’s led ISAF operation. New Zealand is the lead nation in the PRT in Bamyan in Central Afghanistan. He said New Zealand has shown for many years that it sees its own security not in isolation from developments elsewhere and has been making a significant contribution to security and stability not only in its region, but well beyond.

Prime Minister Clark also signed a Security Agreement with NATO, marking an important step towards the enhancement of the relations between NATO and New Zealand. It will facilitate the continued exchange of relevant information pertaining to their cooperation in Afghanistan. A similar agreement has been signed by most of NATO’s EAPC and Mediterranean Dialogue partners.
