NATO-Russia experts
discuss proliferation threats
Some 60 experts and officials from Russia and NATO member countries gathered in Florence, Italy for a seminar on "Proliferation Threats and Challenges", which was organised under the NATO-Russia Council (NRC) on 20 and 21 September 2007.
The event took place at the Institute of Military Aeronautical Sciences. It was attended by senior staff members and experts dealing with proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and their means of delivery. Participants were representatives of ministries of defence and foreign affairs, national delegations at NATO Headquarters, NATO Military Authorities and NATO International Staff.
The seminar contributed to broadening and deepening the discussion on efforts against the proliferation of WMD and their means of delivery through a structured exchange of views, with a particular focus on ballistic missile proliferation and nuclear terrorism. The informal talks proved fruitful, yielding ideas and suggestions, which will be followed up by more formal discussion in the NRC framework.
Cooperation among NRC countries on issues related to the threat of WMD proliferation was identified as a priority in the 1997 NATO Russia Founding Act and in the 2002 Rome Declaration, which established the NRC.
