Afghan officials visit NATO HQ and capitals

A group of representatives from the Afghan Lower House, Upper House, and Provincial Councils paid a visit to NATO HQ and select NATO capitals from 18 to 22 June 2007.

The visit provide an opportunity for an important Afghan audience to discuss a wide range of topics of interest with high-level NATO officials as well as representatives of ministries, parliaments, and think-tank communities in Madrid, Berlin, and The Hague.

Appreciation for support

Meeting with high level officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Netherlands

The programme included briefings and round-table discussions with different NATO and national counterparts dealing with Afghanistan-related issues, as well as specific activities organized by the Embassies of Afghanistan in Spain, Germany, and The Netherlands.

Individual and group interviews with the media were also organized in Madrid and The Hague. 

Meeting with Parliamentary Secretary of State Christian Schmidt, Ministry of Defense – Germany

During the visit, the Afghan delegation expressed its appreciation for NATO’s and the international community’s long-term support to the ongoing stabilization and reconstruction process in Afghanistan.

They also highlighted concrete proposals to strengthen cooperation between Afghanistan and the international community on specific aspects related to the promotion of security, good governance, reconstruction and economic development.

Engagement with Afghan members of the parliament and the provincial councils represents an integral part of NATO’s public diplomacy strategy for Afghanistan.
