Parliamentarians vital to public support, says NATO Secretary General
Addressing the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Madeira, Portugal, 25 May, the NATO Secretary General highlighted the vital role of parliamentarians in ensuring that NATO has the necessary public support.
Public support for NATO's missions and operations, such as in Afghanistan, is more important than ever, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said.
Key issues
The Secretary General told the Spring Session of the Parliamentary Assembly that he is optimistic about NATO's continued involvement in Afghanistan and the chances of success.
He stressed the importance of stepping up of efforts to train and equip the Afghan National Army and the progress being made in implementing the comprehensive approach that Afghanistan clearly needs.
Mr. De Hoop Scheffer also outlined other important issues on NATO's agenda, including the relationship with Russia, Kosovo and missile defence.
The Parliamentary Assembly brings together members of parliament from NATO and Partner countries, in order to build parliamentary and public consensus in support of Alliance policies.
