The Foreign Minister of Albania, Lulzin Basha, visited NATO Headquarters on 3 May to meet for talks with NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer.
The Secretary General and the Foreign Minister discussed the progress of Albania’s reform efforts as well as the situation in the Balkans and Kosovo in particular.
Albania is one of three countries in the Membership Action Plan, a NATO programme of advice, assistance and practical support tailored to the individual needs of countries wishing to join the Alliance. NATO recognises the work done by Albania in pursuing reform on difficult issues and recognises the progress achieved.
However, the work is far from finished. As a candidate for NATO membership, Albania needs to maintain its reform efforts. NATO will provide all the practical support it can for Albania’s restructuring and reform programme.
Key areas include the fight against organised crime and corruption, the reform of the judiciary and the consolidation of the rule of law in Albania.
The Secretary General also expressed his appreciation for Albania’s contribution to NATO’s operations as well for the positive and moderate role with regard to the negotiations on the future status of Kosovo.
