Polish Defence Minister meets with NATO Secretary General
The new Defence Minister of Poland, Aleksander Szczyglo, visited NATO Headquarters on 20 February to meet with Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer.

They discussed the key issues on the Alliance’s agenda, focusing on the situation in Afghanistan.
Praise for contributions
The Secretary General thanked Poland for its contribution to the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in the country, particularly the decision to speed up the deployment of a 1,000-strong battalion at a key moment for the mission.
Mr. De Hoop Scheffer also praised Poland for its contribution to NATO’s peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, KFOR.
The Secretary General and Minister Szczyglo discussed the bilateral talks between the United States and Poland on plans to build part of the US missile defence system on the country’s territory.
Mr. Szczyglo was appointed Defence Minister in February 2006. This was his first foreign trip since his appointment and first visit to NATO HQ.
