NATO to support Kosovo settlement

At a meeting of NATO Ministers in Brussels, 26 January, NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said NATO fully supports and will play its part in the UN-led process to resolve Kosovo’s final status.

The future of Kosovo and NATO’s mission in Afghanistan were the focus of an informal meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the 26 NATO member countries.

The meeting came as the UN envoy on Kosovo, former Finnish president Martti Ahtisaari, briefed the international community in Vienna on his proposal for the resolution of the status of Kosovo.

Need for NATO-EU cooperation

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Mr. De Hoop Scheffer said that NATO fully supports the process laid out by Mr. Ahtisaari.

NATO-KFOR will play its part through and beyond the status process,” said the Secretary General.

Ministers underlined the need for a resolution of the status as soon as possible and called for close NATO-European Union cooperation on Kosovo.
