The Deputy Prime Minister of Iraq, Barham Salih, visited NATO Headquarters on 21 November, to meet with NATO Secretary General, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer.

Mr. Salih thanked the Secretary General for the assistance that NATO is providing in training Iraq’s security forces and building up the country’s security institutions.

Continuing support

The Secretary General assured the Deputy Prime Minister that the Alliance will continue to support Iraq with training and equipment assistance.

They also discussed the political and security situation in Iraq and the region.

Since 2004, NATO provides assistance to the Iraqi government in the training of its security forces. NATO is also involved in coordinating the delivery of equipment donated by individual NATO member countries to Iraq.

All NATO member countries are contributing to the training effort either in or outside Iraq, through financial contributions or donations of equipment.
