Alliance Commander Transformation visits Iraq
General Lance L. Smith, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, visited NATO’s training mission in Iraq on 17 July, and met with the Iraqi Defence Minister to discuss the training and equipment needs of the Iraqi Security Forces. General Smith met with Minister of Defence Abdul-Quader Mohammed Jasim al-Obeidi as well as senior Iraqi officers while touring the NATO mission’s facilities. As part of NATO’s assistance to Iraq, Allied Command Transformation is responsible for providing technical assistance and co-ordinating NATO’s out-of-country training of Iraqi military personnel and government officials. This includes co-ordinating equipment donations from NATO countries to the Iraqi Security Forces in order to meet the country’s security needs as efficiently as possible. To date, almost 700 Iraqis have been sent to out-of-country training and donations of equipment from NATO countries to the Iraqi Security Forces worth more than €100 million have been coordinated.
