NATO Week in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan will host the fourth “NATO Week” in Baku from 3 to 8 July 2006 . In this framework, a series of special events, aimed raising public awareness of NATO policies and structures and reaching out to the civil society, will be organised with the support of NATO Public Diplomacy Division and the Government of Azerbaijan.

The NATO Week will include four major events. First, the fourth annual NATO Summer School in Azerbaijan is a great opportunity to bring together young people from Partner and NATO countries. The aim is to promote dialogue and cooperation among the youth and engage them into security debates in the Euro-Atlantic community.

Second, an inauguration ceremony will be held for the “Melange project”. Funded under NATO’s scientific and environmental programme for Partner countries, this project will assist Azerbaijan in destroying 1,200 tonnes of rocket fuel oxidiser left over from Soviet times.

Third, a “Euro-Atlantic Centre” will be inaugurated. This centre will work as an information centre where the wider public in Azerbaijan will be able to get relevant information and publications on NATO and have access to the NATO website.

Finally, Azerbaijan will host workshop on terrorism on 6 and7 July, organised under the auspices of theEuro-Atlantic Partnership Council. This event will bring together experts and policy makers from NATO and Partner countries with the aim of examining ways and means for further cooperation on counter-terrorism.

Jean Fournet, NATO Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy, will inaugurate the first three events together with related Azerbaijani officials. During his visit to Baku , he will also have meetings with the authorities of the Republic of Azerbaijan .
