On 26-27 April 2006, the fifh biannual Conference of National Armaments Directors (CNAD) exhibition highlighted technology of potential value in support of NATO-led Provincial Reconstruction Teams in Afghanistan. “This is a very timely event. NATO is currently expanding its role in Afghanistan, and the number of Provincial Reconstruction Teams is growing,” said the NATO Secretary General, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, while opening the exhibition. Provincial Reconstruction Teams are combined teams of international civilian and military personnel whose tasks range from providing a secure environment to concrete projects in education and health, to the training of units for the new Afghan National Army and National Police. An innovative concept “PRTs are a truly innovative concept. As such they require innovative technologies and a wider range of more flexible capabilities,” the Secretary General stressed, “This CNAD exhibition on “Technology Support to PRTs” offers a unique opportunity for Allied industries, research institutions, as well as military authorities and National Armaments’ Directors (NADs) to consider interesting solutions for PRT requirements.” To this end the exhibition displays the latest technologies and hardware, which could support the Provincial Reconstruction Team concept and NATO’s deployed forces in Afghanistan. Earlier, the Secretary General opened the Spring 2006 meeting of the Conference of National Armaments Directors, which brings together the top officials responsible for defence procurement in NATO member countries.
