On 4 March, two rockets aimed at the compound of NATO-led troops in northeastern Afghanistan were found and destroyed before they could be launched.

The successful operation was the result of close cooperation between the Afghan police, the country’s security forces and NATO-led peacekeepers.

Inside intelligence

The NATO-led Provincial Reconstruction (PRT) in Feyzabad was informed by the Afghan police about the discovery of two rockets aimed at the Team’s compound.

Military police from the PRT joined Afghan police and security forces at the scene, and the rockets were safely destroyed by a NATO explosive ordnance team.

At present NATO is leading nine Provincial Reconstruction Teams in the North and West of the country, providing security in about 50% of the country’s territory.

Preparations continue for a further expansion of NATO’s role and presence.

In recent months, acting on intelligence and in cooperation with Afghan police and security forces, NATO-led peacekeepers have been able to secure and destroy numerous caches of illegal arms.
