Next NATO Summit in 2006

NATO Foreign Ministers agreed on 8 December that next Summit meeting of NATO Heads of State and Government will be held in Latvia at the end of 2006.

The last NATO Summit was held in Brussels in February this year.

Summit meetings are held at important moments in the Alliance’s history and aim to adapt Alliance policies to changing needs and circumstances.

The 2006 Summit will be the 19th NATO Summit. It is expected to focus on NATO’s transformation, taking stock of what has been accomplished and charting the way ahead for the Alliance.

The decision was announced by the NATO Secretary General, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, at a press conference during a meeting of Foreign Ministers from NATO and partner countries at NATO HQ in Brussels.
