NATO Secretary General calls for closer cooperation
Addressing the OSCE Permanent Council in Vienna on 3 November, NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said that NATO and OSCE should work together not just within but also beyond Europe. The Secretary General also called for closer institutional contacts between the the two organisations and said they should work more closely together on specific issues and projects. Strategy of engagement “Today’s security challenges far exceed the ability of any individual nation or institution,” the Secretary General said in his address, “This is why NATO is seeking to build strong and pragmatic relationships with the United Nations and the European Union. And it is why we are very interested in extending our cooperation with the OSCE as well.” In addition to his address, Mr. De Hoop Scheffer met with the OSCE Secretary General, Mr. Marc Perrin de Brichambaut. The Secretary General then went on to meet with the Austrian Chancellor, Mr. Wolfgang Schuessel, to discuss coperation between NATO and Austria in the framework of the Partnership for Peace. Speaking at the Diplomatic Academy , the Secretary General also called for a “strategy of engagement” to address a time of “global insecurity”. “We live in an era of global challenges. Old security concepts no longer apply. Yet one thing is clear: to safeguard our security today, we have to engage. And that means that we have to project and promote stability. ” |
