Background
NATO - Ukraine relations

Ukraine 's Annual Target Plan for 2005 has just been published on the NATO Web site in English and Ukrainian.

Every year, these plans set targets for activities in different areas that Ukraine wishes to pursue, both internally and in cooperation with NATO, to support the implementation of the objectives of the NATO-Ukraine Action Plan.

Meetings are held twice a year to assess progress in achieving targets and a report is drawn up annually.

A framework for co-operation

The NATO-Ukraine Action Plan, adopted at the November 2002 Prague Summit, aims to deepen and broaden the NATO-Ukraine relationship and to support Ukraine's reform efforts on the road towards closer Euro-Atlantic integration.

It sets out specific goals and objectives in many areas, including political and economic issues; information issues; security defence and military issues; information protection and security; and legal issues.

While responsibility for implementation falls primarily on Ukraine, NATO and individual Allies support the country's reform efforts through practical assistance and advice in many areas.
