Addressing close to 300 Parliamentarians from 40 NATO and partner countries on 31 May, NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer called on the legislators to support the Alliance’s transformation.

Mr. De Hoop Scheffer was addressing the Spring Session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, held in Lubljana, Slovenia from 27 to 31 May.

The NATO Parliamentary Assembly is an inter-parliamentary organisation of legislators from the member countries of the North Atlantic Alliance as well as 13 associate members. Its principal objective is to foster mutual understanding among Alliance parliamentarians of the key security challenges facing the transatlantic partnership.

Parliamentary support

You understand better than most other people why the Alliance must tackle modern security challenges at their source, even well beyond our traditional area of operations,” he said in his address, “I count on your support.

The Session focused on key NATO topics, ranging from a potential NATO role in the Middle East to training military forces to fight terrorism. A highlight was an interactive exercise called “Black Dawn”, which simulated the potentially catastrophic consequences of nuclear terrorism.

During his visit to Lubljana, the Secretary also met for talks with the President of Slovenia, Dr Janez Drnovsek, the President of the National Assembly, Mr. France Cukjati and the Prime Minister, Mr. Janez Jansa.

In addition, the Secretary General addressed students at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Ljubljana.
