Discours du Secrétaire général de l'OTAN, M. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer à Tunis, Tunésie
Background
NATO's Mediterranean Dialogue

On 28 April, the Secretary General of NATO, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, travelled to Tunisia, the first visit by a NATO Secretary General to the country, to discuss broadening cooperation.

This was the latest in a series of visits to NATO’s Mediterranean partners to discuss the implementation of a more ambitious and expanded framework for NATO’s Mediterranean Dialogue.

Tackling terrorism, trafficking

The Secretary General met with President Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali, Foreign Minister Abdelbaki Hermassi and Defence Minister Dali Jazi.

They exchanged ideas on the enhancement of the political and practical dimensions of the Dialogue and its transformation into a genuine partnership, focusing on intelligence sharing, the fight against terrorism and illegal trafficking.

They also discussed the security situation in the region and Tunisia’s possible participation in NATO-led operations.
