Remembering Brosio:
A special event held at NATO Headquarters on 13 April commemorated the 25 th anniversary of the death of Manlio Brosio, the Secretary General of NATO between 1964 and 1971. It included a special photo display and a video presentation of Mr. Brosio’s term in office, the challenges he faced and his legacy as a ‘Cold War consensus-builder’. The current Secretary General of NATO, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, Professor Francesco Perfetti of the Italian Foreign Ministry archives and Italian Defence Minister Antonio Martino paid tribute to the former Secretary General in speeches at the event. "There is ... probably no greater tribute that can be paid to a NATO Secretary General than to describe him as a consensus-builder," said Mr. De Hoop Scheffer, " Manlio Brosio, who had earlier been his country’s Ambassador in Moscow, London, Washington and Paris, was the supreme diplomat and had mastered the art of consensus building . Indeed, no less an authority than Harlan Cleveland, US Ambassador to NATO for part of the Brosio era, credited Manlio Brosio with providing the necessary “political ingredient” for finding consensus on even the most difficult issues." On the occasion of the commemoration, a special article in the NATO Review, NATO’s quarterly magazine, looks back on Manlio Brosio’s record.
