Opening remarks by NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer at the meeting of the NRC
Meeting in Brussels on 9 December, against the backdrop of the events in Ukraine, the NATO-Russia Council addressed the situation in a joint statement issued at the end of the meeting.

The Council took note of recent steps taken by all parties in Ukraine toward resolving the post-election political crisis in accordance with the rule of law and Ukraine’s constitutional norms.

It “appealed to all parties to continue to avoid the use or instigation of violence, to refrain from intimidation of voters, and to work to ensure a free, fair electoral process that reflects the will of the Ukrainian people.”

We reiterated our support for the independence, the sovereignty, the territorial integrity of and democracy in Ukraine,” the statement said.
