congratulated the two new Allies on their membership in

Aircraft (AWACS) will provide support for two major
public events: the Royal Wedding in Spain and the Euro

General de Hoop Scheffer outlined the agenda of the Istanbul Summit,

on Women in the NATO Forces was held at the NATO HQ from
23 to 28 May and called for a greater involvement of female

believed to be rocket-propelled grenades were fired at a Norwegian
patrol of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan.

Over 100 civil emergency experts from 34 NATO and partner countries
met in Dubrovnik, Croatia, 24 to 26 May, to discuss lessons
learned from NATO-coordinated disaster response operations
and exercises. |

For the first time, NATO is testing the activation
of a deployed joint task force (DJTF) headquarters to train for NATO
Response Force operations during an exercise that started on 25 May
and will end on 8 June.

During a visit to Croatia, Albania and
the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia 1, 26-28 May, NATO Secretary General De Hoop Scheffer, said the door to NATO remained
opened but that membership depended on reforms.

visits Ukraine |
|
On 26-27 May, Doug Bereuter paid an official
visit to Ukraine as President of the NATO Parliamentary
Assembly. During the visit he met with President Leonid
Kuchma, Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych, MFA Konstantyn
Hryschenko and with Senior Officials at the Verkhovna Rada
including its Chairman Volodymyr Lytvyn.
