Ukrainian Foreign Minister visits Alliance Headquarters
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Gryshchenko discussed his country’s
cooperation with the Alliance during talks with the new Secretary General
de Hoop Scheffer at NATO Headquarters, on 13 January.
This was the first meeting between the Foreign Minister and Mr. de Hoop
Scheffer in his capacity as Secretary General. The talks focused on plans
and expectations for NATO-Ukraine cooperation in 2004, as well the internal
political situation in Ukraine.
Speaking to reporters following the meeting, Secretary General de Hoop
Scheffer reiterated the importance the Alliance attaches to cooperation
with Ukraine and welcomed the contribution by Ukraine to NATO-led operations,
as well as Iraq.
Mr. Gryschenko extended on behalf of the President of Ukraine, Leonid
Kuchma, an invitation for the Secretary General to visit Kyiv.
