Background
NATO in Afghanistan
On 7 October 2003, Afghan Authorities, with the assistance of NATO-led troops from the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), arrested a suspected terrorist in Kabul.

The suspect is Abu Bakr who is believed to be a prominent Hezb-Islami-Gulbuddin (HIG) commander in the Kabul area. His arrest is a significant development. HIG is a prominent terrorist group, with a history of terrorist atrocities, and represents a threat against the people of Kabul and Afghanistan. The suspect has been detained for questioning.

ISAF will continue to support and assist the Afghan Authorities as is deemed necessary to ensure the security and stability of Kabul and its surroundings. NATO took over command and coordination of the 5,500-strong force on 11 August.
