Top policy-makers and experts from North America and Europe gathered in Rome, 2-4 October to discuss the current state of transatlantic relations.

High-level participants, including Richard Pearl, Javier Solana, Carl Bildt and the Deputy Secretary General of NATO, Ambassador Minuto Rizzo, together with representatives from industry, the media and academia also attended the conference entitled "Relaunching the transatlantic partnership: common goals and shared values".

Factors that divide and unite the US and Europe were analysed by participants, as were the challenge of democratisation in the Middle East, international legitimacy between the UN and the coalitions of the willing or NATO's role in facing current threats.

The conference was organised by the Aspen Institute Italia and the New Atlantic Initiative and was co-sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NATO and the American Embassy in Rome.
