Multiculturalism and NATO

On 14 May 2003, in the historic Crimean town of Bakhchisaray, Ukrainian and NATO experts discussed “Multiculturalism in NATO: Enhancing Security Together”.

The seminar was an opportunity to share experiences in the development of multinational culture, in particular, standards and principles of common usage in NATO and partner countries. Both H.E. Vecdi Gonul, Minister of Defence of Turkey and General Bannikh, the State Secretary of the Ukraine Ministry of Defence, delivered speeches in which they stressed the importance and strength of NATO as a multicultural Alliance, and the benefits that any ally or partner could draw from this specificity.

Other participants came from the United States, Poland, Germany, Italy and Belgium. Numerous Ukrainian governmental and media representatives, as well as elected delegates from the local Tatar community took part in the discussions, as well as representatives from NATO HQ.

The event was held in a symbolic venue: the House-Museum of Ismail Bey Gasprinski 1 (1851-1914) , a well-known Crimean Tatar humanist, and was organised by the non-governmental organisation Crimean Independent Center for Political Research and Journalism, with the support of the NATO Information and Documentation Center in Ukraine.
