President
of Lithuania opens
NATO workshop in Vilnius
The President of the Republic of Lithuania, Mr. Valdas Adamkus, gave
a welcome address to participants in a NATO Advanced Research Workshop
on "Consideration and Options on a New Nuclear Power Plant in
Ignalina, Lithuania", which took place in Vilnius from 23 to
25 September.
In his speech President Adamkus emphasised the importance to Lithuania
of the workshop topic, adding that the people of Lithuania were not yet
fully aware of the programmes which NATO runs in support of collaboration
in research or in the field of economics. He remarked that "Today,
when the future of Lithuania's nuclear energy has become the subject of
broad and heated discussions, fresh views and new ideas of all experts
gathered here are highly important. We have to consider and project all
possible options on a new nuclear power plant and discuss whether it would
be feasible to build a new plant after shutting down both units of the
Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant."
