Transforming
the stereotyped image
of NATO-Russia relations
The conference "Russia-NATO: from the Perception of Enemies to one
of Partnership" was held 18-20 September in Moscow. It was organised
by the NGO "Generals for Democracy and Humanism" and the Centre
for Political and International Studies, with the support of the Moscow-based
NATO Office of Information and Press.
The conference aimed to develop recommendations on how to transform the
image of enemies to one of partnership, as stereotypes can still influence
perceptions of NATO-Russia relations. It was noted that residual Cold
War mentalities create obstacles for further normalisation of NATO-Russian
relations and should be removed. The 35 participants included representatives
of the Russian Military, Patrick Hardouin, director of the NATO Economics
Directorate, civilian experts, as well as representatives of the European
Union and the Commonwealth of Independent States. Delegates concluded
that NATO and Russia should seek to invoke changes in perceptions by focusing
on adapting the content of military education and the nature of mass media
coverage of NATO-Russia relations.
Proceedings from the conference will be published and sent to NATO structures
and the Russian government.
