Lord Robertson visits troops in GermanyNATO Secretary General, Lord Robertson, had his first meeting with German Defence Minister, Dr Peter Struck, on 6 September, during his visit of German and British troops in Augustdorf and Sennelager, in the north-west of the country. Accompanied by Dr Struck, Lord Robertson first visited the German 21st Armoured Brigade "Lipperland" in Augustdorf before attending a demonstration of armoured infantry and tanks by the 212th Mechanised Infantry Battalion. This was followed by a visit to the London Scottish Regiment in Sennelager, of which the Secretary General is Honorary Colonel.
The London Scottish Regiment was set up in 1859,
under the command of Lt. Col. Lord Elcho who later became Honorary Colonel
from 1878 to 1900. In 1992, the London Scottish merged with three other
companies, which now form the London Regiment. The trip was an opportunity
for Lord Robertson to meet the soldiers and see them, for the first time,
in the field during one of their exercises. Lord Robertson has been Honorary
Colonel since December 2000.
