Exercise
Bright Eye 2002
A Search and Rescue (SAR) exercise has started in NATO's Northern region
to test and further develop procedures and facilities for the command,
control and coordination of SAR resources. Exercise Bright Eye 2002 started
on 15 April and will last until 24 May. It is divided into three different
parts:
- North: exercise conducted in and around the northern part of the
Norwegian Sea and waters adjacent to Iceland and Greenland;
- Middle: exercise conducted in and around the northern part of the
North Sea and the Southern part of the Norwegian Sea and Skagerak;
- South: exercise conducted in and around the middle and southern part
of the North Sea and the western part of the Baltic Sea.
This SAR exercise is a biennial event that, this year, has brought together
eight NATO member countries: Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Iceland, the Netherlands,
Norway, the United Kingdom and some United States elements stationed in
Iceland, and one partner country: Sweden. It comes under the command of
HQ Allied Naval Forces North, Northwood, United Kingdom, which is a command
that is double-hatted as Regional HQ East Atlantic
