A Search and Rescue (SAR) exercise has started in NATO's Northern region to test and further develop procedures and facilities for the command, control and coordination of SAR resources. Exercise Bright Eye 2002 started on 15 April and will last until 24 May. It is divided into three different parts:

  • North: exercise conducted in and around the northern part of the Norwegian Sea and waters adjacent to Iceland and Greenland;
  • Middle: exercise conducted in and around the northern part of the North Sea and the Southern part of the Norwegian Sea and Skagerak;
  • South: exercise conducted in and around the middle and southern part of the North Sea and the western part of the Baltic Sea.

This SAR exercise is a biennial event that, this year, has brought together eight NATO member countries: Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, the United Kingdom and some United States elements stationed in Iceland, and one partner country: Sweden. It comes under the command of HQ Allied Naval Forces North, Northwood, United Kingdom, which is a command that is double-hatted as Regional HQ East Atlantic
