Opening
of an information, consultation and training centre in Moscow
A contract between NATO and the Moscow State University for
Economics, Statistics and Informatics (MESI) was signed in Moscow
on 20 March 2002 for the opening of a NATO-Russia "Information,
Consultation and Training Centre". This centre will
soon be opened by the Ministry of Defence in Moscow and will
deal with the resettlement of military
personnel due for discharge or already discharged from the armed
forces of the Russian Federation. NATO, which is funding the project,
was represented at the signing ceremony by the NATO Economics
Committee Chairman, Mr Patrick Hardouin.
The centre, which will be staffed of seven Russian specialists, will disseminate information throughout
Russia on all aspects of social adaptation of former
military personnel, including issues such as legal, financial,
and housing policy. The information will be made available via
the Internet and through a network of special advisors on social
adaptation. The centre will train up to one hundred of these special
advisors during the first year.
A Memorandum of Agreement on the establishment of the centre
was signed on 6 June 2001 during the meeting of NATO Defence
Ministers.
