NATO's two strategic commands
conduct exercise "Strong Resolve"

A major military exercise called "Strong Resolve 2002" will take place in Norway and Poland from 1 to 15 March. It will test NATO's ability to conduct two simultaneous operations: a NATO Article 5 collective defence operation and a crisis response operation. It will involve naval, ground and air forces from the Alliance's two strategic commands: the Supreme Headquarters Allied Forces Europe (SHAPE) and the Headquarters Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic (HQ SACLANT).

The NATO Article 5 collective defence portion of the exercise will involve a conventional attack against a NATO member country and will be conducted in Norway and the surrounding sea and air spaces. The crisis response operation, involving the deployment of a NATO-led Combined Joint Task Force (CJTF) to mediate between two warring countries beyond NATO's area of responsibility, will take place in Poland.

Apart from testing the Alliance's mechanisms for collective defence and crisis response operations, "Strong Resolve 2002" will exercise elements of the NATO integrated command structure in its full range of tasks, in crisis and war, and help increase interoperability between and with Partner countries. Twelve Partner countries will be participating in this exercise, together with 14 NATO countries.

"Strong Resolve" has been scheduled by the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) for the Article 5 part of the exercise and by the Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic (SACLANT) for the crisis response operation. The Commander-in-Chief, North Europe (CINCNORTH) will conduct the Article 5 operation and the Commander, Striking Fleet Atlantic (COMSTRIKFLANT) the crisis response part of the exercise. Three complementary exercises will take place under the common scenario of "Strong Resolve": Exercise Adventure Express, Exercise Affirmative Alert and Exercise Battle Griffin.
