First visit
of Bulgarian Prime Minister to NATO HQ

The former King Simeon II of Bulgaria, H.E. Simeon Saxe-Coburg
Gotha, came on his first visit to NATO HQ on 22 October since he
has been elected Prime Minister of Bulgaria. He was accompanied
by his Foreign Minister, Dr Solomon Passy.

The 8th meeting of the North Atlantic Council - NATO's top decision-making
body- and the Political and Security Committee of the European Union
took place at NATO HQ on 23 October 2001.

Command at AFSOUTH
|

During a change of command ceremony at the regional HQ Allied Forces
South (AFSOUTH) on 24 October, Admiral James Ellis, US Navy, was
succeeded by Admiral Gregory G. Johnson, US Navy.

cooperation and European security

"Ukrainian-NATO cooperation as an important aspect of the
strengthening of the European Security System" was the
theme of a NATO-sponsored seminar held in the industrial city of
Luhansk in eastern Ukraine, on 24 October.

Transatlantic
link "as strong as ever"

|
On 24 October, during a two-day trip to Lisbon, Portugal, NATO
Secretary General Lord Robertson met Portuguese President Jorge
Sampaio, Prime Minister Antonio Guterres, Foreign Minister Jaime
Gama and Defence Minister Rui Pena. The following day, he addressed
a conference on the future of transatlantic relations jointly organised
by the Luso-American Foundation for Development and the Portuguese
Atlantic Committee.

High-level
briefing on missile defence
|
|
In the wake of the previous weekend's talks between US President
George Bush and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Shanghai, China,
NATO ambassadors were updated on US plans for a missile defence
shield at a high-level briefing at NATO headquarters on 25 October.

Parliamentarians
discuss security in the Black Sea region
|
|
Parliamentarians from NATO and Partner countries gathered in Bucharest,
Romania, for a seminar on "The role of NATO in the security
of the Black Sea region". The event, organised by the NATO
Parliamentary Assembly in cooperation with the Romanian Chamber
of Deputies from 25 to 27 October, was attended by both Romanian
Foreign Minister Mircea Geoana and Defence Minister Ioan Mircea
Pascu.

10th anniversary
of the EAPC
|
|
On 26 October, NATO celebrated ten years of partnership and cooperation
with its partner countries from Central and Eastern Europe, the
Caucases and Central Asia, by organising a high-level conference
at NATO HQ, Brussels. Re-broadcasting of the morning events is available
on the NATO web site, covering the speeches given by NATO Secretary
General, Lord Robertson, the former President of Finland, Martti
Ahtisaari, former Prime Minister of Poland, Jan Krzysztof Bielecki
and former Prime Minister of Italy, Emilio Colombo.

Examining
the impact of munitions on populations and the environment
|
|
A workshop held in Portugal from 28 to 30 October brought together
some 30 experts from 11 countries to study the scientific and technological
aspects of protecting populations and the environment from the adverse
effects of munitions.
