Kouchner's farewell address
The former Special Representative of the Secretary General of the UN to Kosovo, Dr Bernard Kouchner (photo), addressed representatives from the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC) - comprising 46 NATO and partner countries- and from other KFOR contributing countries on 30 January. After Dr Kouchner had made an assessment of the current situation in Kosovo, he was congratulated on the pioneering work he had achieved in the province during his eighteen months in office.

Lithuanian Prime Minister at NATO HQ
On January 31, Lord Robertson met with Prime Minister, Rolandas Paksas, for the first time since he was appointed to this post after the general elections held last October. They discussed a number of issues including Lithuania's foreign policy priorities, the country's relations with Russia and its participation in the NATO-led peacekeeping forces in Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Also on the agenda was Lithuania's on-going preparations for potential membership of the Alliance. Assessment of progress made so far is currently underway, in particular, regarding defence reform. The new government has stated that it is keeping the agreed spending targets for defence at 1.95%-2% of its GDP.

Lord Robertson in Oslo
Lord Robertson went on a two-day visit (1-2 February) to the Norwegian capital Oslo to meet with Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, Minister of Foreign Affairs Thorbjørn Jagland and Defence Minister Bjørn Tore Godal.

Munich conference on international security issues

The International Security Policy Conference (formerly known as the Wehrkunde Conference) held its annual meeting in Munich, from 2-3 February. This forum meets every February to discuss NATO-related and transatlantic security issues.

Military Committee goes to Northwood
NATO's highest military authority, the Military Committee, visited the Alliance's regional command in Northwood, United Kingdom, on 2 February. This was the first time that representatives of the Military Committee had come to EASTLANT (Regional Headquarters East Atlantic), double-hatted as NAVNORTH (Headquarters Allied Naval Forces North), since new headquarters were built in 1996.
