WEU Permanent Council meets at Ambassadorial level with eight Central and Eastern European countries. The North Atlantic Council authorises the use of a NATO airborne early warning force (AWACS) to monitor the UN-mandated no-fly zone in effect over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

NATO Ministers of Defence meeting in the Nuclear Planning Group (NPG) at Gleneagles, Scotland, focus on the implications of the Alliances role in peacekeeping activities for NATOs collective defence planning. New political guidelines providing for reduced reliance on nuclear weapons are also adopted.
