Effect: Rationalising pilot training brings savings and provides a critical enabler for smaller nations that have difficulties to maintain this training capability on their own.

Project name: Multinational Aviation Training Centre (MATC)

Effect: Rationalising training for flying and ground helicopter personnel will bring economies of scale, remove inefficiencies, increase interoperability and lay the groundwork for potential further downstream integration.

Project name: Jet aircraft upgrade to be NATO universal armaments interface compliant

Who: 9 NATO and 1 partner country

Effect: Creating a standard for weapons integration on aircraft, which will reduce future costs, increase interoperability, and reduce time to market for the integration of new weapons.

Project name: Multinational joint headquarters Ulm, Germany

Timeline: the headquarters was inaugurated on 2 July 2013

Who: 15 NATO and 2 partner countries take part in this project

Effect: The headquarters exercises command and control for multinational operations tasked by NATO, the European Union, or the United Nations. It is the only multinational and joint Bundeswehr command equipped to deploy anywhere in the world at any time to exercise command and control of operations abroad.

Project name: Pooling maritime patrol aircraft

Timeline: estimated to be up and running in July 2014

Who: 5 NATO countries

Effect: Creation of a multinational framework to pool and share maritime patrol aircraft for operations and exercises, allowing more efficient allocation.

Project name: Multinational logistics partnership, helicopter maintenance

Timeline: completed in June 2013

Who: 5 NATO and 1 partner

Effect: Reduction of helicopter repair times by up to 90 per cent through a multinational approach to helicopter maintenance in Afghanistan, saving millions of euros.
