Permanent Representative of Greece

George Savvaides
Ambassador George V. Savvaides (51) has succeeded Ambassador Vassilis Zafiropoulos as Permanent Representative of Greece on the North Atlantic Council.

After post-graduate studies leading to a Master of Laws degree at Harvard University, USA, Mr. Savvaides joined the Foreign Ministry in Athens in 1972. Following service as Attaché and then Third Secretary, he was appointed Consul in Boston (USA) in 1976, returning to the Foreign Ministry three years later to take up duties in the Political Affairs Department dealing with Africa and the Middle East. In 1981, he was posted to Skopje, in the former Yugoslavia, as Consul General then to Brussels as Counsellor in the Greek Delegation to NATO, initially (1983-87) as Political Adviser and then (1987-1991) as Defence Adviser. He returned to the Foreign Ministry at the end of this period to head the Cyprus section of the Turkey-Cyprus Bilateral Relations Directorate, becoming Director of the Turkey-Cyprus Bilateral Relations Directorate in 1992, a post he retained until his appointment as Permanent Representative to NATO.
