Permanent Representative of Spain

Ambassador Javier Conde (50) has succeeded Ambassador Carlos Miranda as Permanent Representative of Spain on the North Atlantic Council.

Mr. Conde entered the Spanish diplomatic service in 1971 when he joined the Foreign Ministry's Directorate General for International Economic Relations. In 1976, he became Assistant Director General for International Relations in the Directorate for Maritime Fisheries. This was followed two years later by his appointment as Director for Political Affairs in the Africa and Asia Department and then as Counsellor at the Ministry of Transport, Tourism and Communications. Between 1979 and 1983, he was Economic and Commercial Counsellor to the Embassy in Rabat, subsequently (1983-1986) performing similar duties in Buenos Aires. He returned to the Foreign Ministry to become the General Director for Juridical and Institutional Coordination within the Ministry's Secretariat of State for European Communities and then, in 1990, Head of the Private Office of the Secretary of State for European Communities. During the next four years (1990-1994), he served as Ambassador to Algeria, subsequently returning to the Ministry in Madrid to take up the appointment as Secretary General for European Community affairs.
