North Atlantic Council visit to Afghanistan

The North Atlantic Council, NATO’s highest level decision-making body, is visiting Afghanistan from 16th-18th March 2009.  The visit is led by the NATO Secretary General, Mr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer.  NATO Ambassadors are also joined on this trip by Ambassadors of non-NATO ISAF contributing countries.  The Chairman of the Military Committee, Admiral Giampaolo Di Paola and the Alliance’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, General John Craddock, are accompanying the Council.

During the visit, the Council will travel to various ISAF installations and NATO-led Provincial Reconstruction Teams.

The Council will hold meetings with President Karzai and other key representatives from the Afghan Government and Parliament.  It will also meet with the Commander of the ISAF mission, General McKiernan, the NATO Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan, Ambassador Fernando Gentilini, and members of the international community in Kabul.
