NATO today approved the nomination of General Bantz J. Craddock, US Army, to succeed General James L. Jones, as Supreme Allied Commander, Europe.

In a letter to NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, U.S. President George W. Bush asked the NATO Member States to agree to release General Jones from his assignment as Supreme Allied Commander, Europe, at a date yet to be determined. The NATO Defence Planning Committee, which takes this decision, agreed but also expressed to General Jones, in the name of NATO governments, their gratitude for his distinguished service.

President Bush proposed General Craddock take up the position of SACEUR. In response, the Defence Planning Committee today approved the nomination of General Craddock to succeed General Jones as Supreme Allied Commander, Europe. Pending US Senate confirmation, General Craddock will assume the positions of both SACEUR and Commander, U.S. European Command.
