Statement by the NATO Secretary General on UK announcement to send more personnel to Afghanistan Background NATO in Afghanistan I welcome the United Kingdom Defence Secretary’s announcement that the UK will strengthen its contingent in Afghanistan. These extra personnel will reinforce the security operation, help to accelerate reconstruction, and provide more training to Afghan forces. This decision reflects NATO’s firm resolve to continue to support Afghanistan’s reconstruction and its democratic development.
