News
18 June 2006 - NATO NATO Week in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan will, for the first time, host the NATO Science Committee’s annual summer meeting in Almaty on June 19th, 2006. This inaugural meeting, chaired by NATO Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy, Mr. Jean Fournet, will be accompanied by a series of public diplomacy and scientific events throughout Kazakhstan. Their aim is to further enhance dialogue and practical cooperation between Kazakhstan and NATO. This string of youth seminars, scientific workshops, and roundtable discussions, described as a ‘NATO Week,’ starts on June 18th in Almaty and ends on June 22nd, 2006 in Astana.

The NATO Week will host three scientific workshops to be conducted in Almaty between 20-22nd June 2006, which involve specialists from Kazakhstan, NATO countries and other Partner countries. The workshops will address topics which are of key interest to Kazakhstan such as: Radiological Risks in Central Asia; Principles, Strategies and High Technologies of Information Security; and Facilitating Regional Security in Central Asia through Improved Management of Transboundary Water Basin Resources. The NATO week will also consist of several seminars at Almaty and Astana-based universities and will include events like the inauguration of a NATO Depository Library at al-Farabi Kazakhstan National University and a best essay competition for students to write on the subject: Kazakhstan and NATO: Can the ties be strengthened?

The NATO Science Committee oversees NATO's Security Through Science (STS) programme, which concentrates cooperation on three broad security-related areas: Defence Against Terrorism; Countering Non-Traditional Threats to Security; and Partner Country Priorities. NATO and Kazakhstan have enjoyed an active Security Through Science Programme, including implementation of valuable projects like the assessment of radiological risks in the Semipalatinsk region and the Virtual Silk High Way project, which links scientific and academic communities to reliable and affordable high speed Internet bandwidth.

There will be a media opportunity at the opening session of the NATO Science Committee meeting on June 19th.
