Statement by the Secretary General on the Iraqi elections Background NATO’s assistance to Iraq On behalf of NATO, I congratulate the Iraqi people on the elections that they have held today. The high turnout, and the participation of parties representing the full spectrum of Iraqi society, is an important step forward in the political process. I hope this election will mark a turning point for Iraq, and lay the foundation for a country that is increasingly unified and at peace.
