NATO Secretary General to visit the United States The Secretary General of NATO, Mr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, will travel to Washington from 1 to 3 June 2005. During his visit on Wednesday 1 June he will meet President Bush, Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld and Director of National Intelligence Negroponte. He will also attend a dinner hosted by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. On Thursday 2 June, the Secretary General and the North Atlantic Council will participate in the annual SACT Seminar in Norfolk where he will deliver a keynote speech on NATO's political and military transformation. Ambassador Lakhdar Brahimi, Special Adviser to the UN Secretary General, General Abizaid, Commander of the US Central Command, and Mrs Rice will also be attending the seminar. The Secretary General will meet the press in Norfolk at approximately 10.45 local time. Mr de Hoop Scheffer will also be making a speech at an international seminar on the development of NATO's role in the Middle East, to be held at the Carnegie Endowment in Washington.
