NATO's Mediterranean Dialogue & Istanbul Cooperation Initiative

On 18 March 2005 the Secretary General of NATO, Mr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, and the North Atlantic Council will travel to Rome to participate in an international conference on "NATO and the Broader Middle East Region" jointly organised by the NATO Public Diplomacy Division and the NATO Defense College in Rome.

The Conference will bring together NATO Permanent Representatives, high ranking officials from Gulf countries participating in the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative, and a select group of NATO officials, Parliamentarians, academics and security experts from NATO nations and countries of the Gulf.

The event aims to foster an exchange of views on the broader Middle East region, and to stimulate ideas on the further implementation of the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative, which was adopted by NATO's Heads of State and Government at the June 2004 Istanbul Summit.

The Secretary General of NATO Mr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer will give a press conference at 18.00 at the NATO Defense College in Rome.

Applications for accreditation should be submitted to the NATO Defense College before 15.00, 18 March 2005. Applications received after that time will not be processed.

All media representatives are informed that security personnel will examine and may test equipment and personal effects carried onto the site and are advised to arrive sufficiently in time in order to clear the security checks.
