Press Release (2004)024 26 Feb. 2004 |
Statement from NATO Secretary General following the death of the President of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia(1) , Boris Trajkovski On behalf of the Atlantic Alliance, I wish to express my profound condolences at the sudden death of President Boris Trajkovski, whose plane crashed this morning in Bosnia and Herzegovina. President Trajkovski demonstrated great leadership to preserve the unity of his country when it was under threat. In difficult circumstances, and in the face of opposition from many, he guided the peace process in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and was instrumental in the signature and implementation of the Ohrid Agreement which re-established peace and stability. I pay tribute to this courageous statesman who fought to ensure that
democratic values would prevail in his country, and to help bring the
former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia closer to the Euro-Atlantic institutions,
including NATO. 1. Turkey recognizes the Republic of Macedonia with its constitutional name |
